Rachel P. wrote The Little Kitty because she loves kitties. The trio of Rachel P., Isabela C. and Madison R. liked the Magic Schoolbus books so much that they named their book The Magic Schoolbus. The Sports Book was authored by Harrison G. and Jacob N. because they love to learn about and play sports. Tatiana D. likes being fancy and co-author Skye R. is a tomboy. Together they wrote We Love Being Fancy. The name of Ava's soccer team, the Rolling Piggies, served as the title of the book by Ava E., Halle C. and Olivia B. 4. Day 138: Hannah and Maya, 4GW

    [ By on May 09, 2013 ]

We are writing a book for our Kindergarten buddies. A lot of us wrote about our buddies in our stories. The books are picture books and they have only two sentences per page because they are for Kindergarteners. You got to choose your topic, so everybody has different topics. What we did in the beginning was we interviewed our buddies about what they liked and wrote our stories about that. Then we brainstormed and then we made our beginning, middle and end. Then we started writing our actual sentences in a notepad. It was a really creative experience. Hannah: My buddy's name is Phoebe, so my story is about Phoebe going to the ...

  6. Day 128: “Student on the Street” interviews

    [ By on April 25, 2013 ]

What would you say if you were heading out the door and someone asked you, "Quick, what did you learn today or find interesting during school?" While you think of your response, here is what several 5th grade girls had to share as they were about to leave school. I learned that me and M. make a good team at soccer because we pass well to each other. I am better at playing soccer with my friends than with strangers. I've known most of my classmates since Kindergarten, so it's easier playing with them. I found out that I know pretty much every song in Les Miz because we sang them during Recess. I learned how to make a five-paragraph essay during Writing. I'm ...

  7. Day 123: The Dendrologists of 2V

    [ By on April 18, 2013 ]

Overheard from the dendrologists of 2V as they planted the lettuce seeds sowed prior to March vacation in the Environmental Lab. Where do lettuce seeds come from? Do you think the plant will come back to life? Some of our lettuce grew. Some didn't grow as well. After planting the crop, the following predictions were made: Probably all the plants will spread out - stretch out. The ones that are facing down will not grow as well as the ones growing up. The ones facing up had a head start. The dendrologists of 2V are eager planters!

  8. Day 115: Laurie, LS STEAM Integrator

    [ By on April 04, 2013 ]

This space is usually filled by the wonders of the day as seen through a lower school child's eyes. Today, I had the pleasure of sharing the morning (and again this evening) with parents. Together we explored what it is like to be a lower schooler at the River. Since we were simulating what it was like to be a student here, I figured that gave me authoring rights for today! This image is of a portion of the Riverdale Mission Statement. Take note of the portion in bold. …abundant play in the open… Children learn from playing and by playing. This ongoing play happens throughout the day at the River. ...

  10. Day 106: Curt, Second Grader

    [ By on March 07, 2013 ]

Art and drawing is what I do on the bus. I do art because it's fun to do and when you're focused on a project it's like you never want to stop. I draw on the bus because I do not want to do electronics because it is sometimes boring. Here is one of my pictures. I like drawing Asian or Egyptian stuff, or old fashioned. I draw with pencils, sometimes color or sometimes regular. I also draw with markers but not in my notebook because the pages are very light and the marker splatters; it goes through the page. The words in the ...
