Six Students Present Research, Facilitate Discussion at Roundtable Conference

[ April 29, 2014 ]

YPARconference2014Members of Riverdale’s YPAR (Youth Participatory Action Research) group recently presented their research at a roundtable conference held by the Center for the Study of Boys’ and Girls’ Lives at UPenn.

Seniors Emma Brick and Olivia Irby, and sophomores Nicole Beckman, Stephen Brand, Madeleine Goldberg, and Kayla Waterman, facilitated a research-supported discussion on how Riverdale’s Middle School curriculum influences students’ character development. Riverdale’s YPAR group was one of three to do an actual presentation; other schools presented posters of their work.

Riverdale’s research project was the culmination of two years of research, all done by the students, notes Dr. Sarah McErlean, Riverdale’s Institutional Researcher and the YPAR faculty advisor. The YPAR students evaluated data from Middle School surveys and performed focus groups with Middle School students.
