Grade 5 Engineers Spend a Week Building Bridges

[ May 08, 2014 ]

During this year’s Lower School Project-Based Learning (PBL) Week, more than a dozen Grade 5 students researched, designed, and built a miniature bridge of their own creation.

Led by Lower School STEAM teacher John Mueser, the students used laptops, the iPad Bridge Constructor application, graph paper, and the latest high-tech learning gadget—the brain—to design bridges that they then brought to life using inexpensive materials, such as: toothpicks, straws, craft sticks, natural sticks, string or rope, balsa wood, tacky glue, or other available materials.

“These young engineers successfully built and displayed their creative work from the suspension bridges of the East and West coasts of the U.S. all the way to Angola, and other unique styles in between,” John notes.
