[ May 16, 2014 ]

The recent Jazz Ensemble Spring Concert, held for the first time in the John R. Johnson Student Center, transported the audience to “The Maroon Note Jazz Club” for the evening.

The concert featured guest artist Jimmy Owens, a trumpeter who in 2012 was awarded the nation’s highest honor in jazz, the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award, as well as solos from many of the talented student performers.

The evening started with a Count Basie number, “Jumpin’ at the Woodside,” featuring soloists Emilio Modeste ’18 on the tenor sax, Sebastian Peskind ’14 on trombone, Gabe Murray ’14 on piano, and Hunter Goodin ’16 on trumpet.

“Take the A-Train” was next, featuring guest performers Jimmy Owens on trumpet and Clarence Banks on trombone. “Cho = Chico Hamilton Organization” spotlighted the talents of soloists Alex Straus ’14 on alto sax, Travis Brady ’14 on tenor sax, Emilio on tenor sax, Zach Halem ’14 on alto sax, and Eli Sands ’14 on baritone sax.

Elena Golub ’16 was the vocalist on “Feeling Good,” followed by “When Sunny Gets Blue,” with solos by Zach, Eli, and Emilio. The final number was Herbie Hancock’s “Cantaloupe Island,” featuring a solo by each member of the jazz ensemble.
