Middle, Upper School Music Students Present Spring Concerts

Riverdale’s talented musicians performed recently at several concerts.

The Orchestra, under the direction of John Lettieri, played four pieces, including the Preludio and Allemanda from Arcangelo Corelli’s Concerto Grosso in F Op. 6, No. 9; Mozart’s Lucio Silla Overture K. 135; Edward Elgar’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra; and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2.

Riverdale’s Wind Symphony, including science faculty members Phoebe Coles and Alan Pike, performed  several selections, including Michael Oare’s “Cyclone,” John Phillip Sousa’s “Semper Fidelis,” Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight,” “The Best of Queen,” Duke Ellington’s “Come Sunday,” and Capital Cities’ “Safe and Sound.” The Wind Symphony is under the direction of Jason Curry and Rob Susman.

The Middle School String Ensemble presented six selections: “Alla Hornpipe” from The Water Music by Handel; “May It Be” from Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring; Scott Joplin’s “The Easy Winners;” “Scheherazade;” Lennon and McCartney’s “Let It Be;” and the 2013 Avicii song, “Wake Me Up.”

The Sixth Grade Band entertained with several popular songs, including “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction; “Firework” by Katy Perry; “Let It Go” from Disney’s Frozen; and Josh Groban’s version of “You Raise Me Up.” The Sixth Grade Band also performed “Dona Nobis Pacem,” the Ralph Vaughan Williams cantata.
