Theater Arts Afternoon Celebrates Work of Upper School Dance & Theater Classes

[ May 23, 2014 ]

This year’s Theater Arts Afternoon featured the acting, dancing, and directing talents of Upper School students in a variety of dance and theater classes.

The Dance as Art class kicked things off with a tap number to Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” and also performed “Frozen…a Dance” to music from the popular Disney movie. A trio of dance students—Kamala Hargrove ’15, Diana Stettner ’15, and Rebecca Thau ’16—also performed a routine to the song, “Say Something.”

Students in the Musical Theater Dance class showed off their dancing prowess in two numbers: “Steam Heat” from The Pajama Game and “Forget about the Boy” from Thoroughly Modern Millie.

The students from all three dance classes—Dance as Art, Dance as Physical Education, and Musical Theater Dance—joined together for the final number, Beyonce’s “End of Time.”

The Intro to Theater students presented two Christopher Durang one-act plays: Naomi in the Living Room and Phyllis and Xenobia. They also showcased their directing skills in four short scenes featuring other members of the Intro to Theater class: “Gone Fishin’,” “The Prom,” “Cold Stone Creamery,” and “The Sitcom.”

Students in Acting I performed the Mark Harvey Levine one-act play, Surprise, a scene from Goodfellas, and a monologue based on William Mastrosimone’s one-act play, Bang Bang You’re Dead.

The Advanced Acting class put on NYC: A Subway Tale, which they wrote and created during the course of the academic school year.
