  2. Four Students Receive Awards for Excellence in Science

    Two juniors and two seniors were recently recognized for their outstanding achievements in science and mathematics.

    Junior Robert Proner won The Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award for excellence in science, while classmate Kirk Thaker was awarded the Rensselaer Medal for excellence in science and mathematics. Seniors Jill Shah and Zachery Halem both received the Charmatz Award, which is presented to those seniors who have demonstrated four years of excellent work in science courses.

  3. Senior Athletes to Play Division I Sports at Two Ivy League Schools

    Two Riverdale Country School athletes will be playing sports for Ivy League teams this fall: Jordan Brail '14 will play squash for Cornell, while Julia Sesler '14 will row for Yale. Jordan Brail will suit up with Cornell’s Big Red Bears. He is currently ranked in the top 50 in the U.S. Squash Association’s Boys Under 19 division, as well as in the top 25 of the Adult Men’s 5.0 division. In addition to being a key member of Riverdale’s Boys Varsity Squash team, Jordan was also Co-Captain of Riverdale’s Boys Varsity Soccer team this fall, earning a spot on the 2013 All-New York City Soccer Teams, Second Team.   4. Six Students Attend Student Diversity Leadership Conference in Washington, DC

    Several juniors and seniors are traveling to Washington, DC, to attend the joint Student Diversity Leadership Conference/People of Color Conference for four days. Khalif Andre '15, Maria Carrasco '14, Kamala Hargrove '15, Nairobi Jeanniton '15, Gabriela Morales '15, and Akeem Williams '15, as well as Dean of Students Julie Choi and Hill Campus Coordinator of Community Engagement Antoinette Quarshie, will attend a variety of workshops and presentations. The theme of the PoCC is "The Capital's Mosaic: Independent School Leaders Building an Interconnected World." The theme of the SDLC is "Foresight is 20/20: Capitalizing on Our United State."   5. Faculty Beat Seniors in Annual Soccer Game

    This year's Riverdale Super Clasico (annual seniors vs. faculty soccer match) was indeed a classic! The score was close throughout the whole game and—for a change—the faculty squeaked by with an 8-6 win. “There was a solid turnout of teachers, coaches, and students, and fun was had by all,” said Middle and Upper School language teacher Gaspar Epstein, who organized the event. The game's MVPs were Jed Silverstein (Coordinator of the Hill Campus Learning Research Team and Upper School English teacher) for his diving saves, and senior Luca Pinelli for his four goals.

  6. Seven Students Receive Science Awards

    Junior Zachery Halem received the Bausch and Lomb Honory Science Award from the University of Rochester for academic excellence in science, while another junior, Jill Shah, won the Rensselaer Medal from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for excellence in mathematics and science. In addition, five seniors were given the Charmatz Award, named after the late former science department chair, Dr. Richard Charmatz: Christie Corn, Minyi Lee, Henry Magun, Daniel Vaccaro, and Jason Vaccaro.   7. Four Seniors Chosen for NYC Mayor’s Cup Lacrosse All-Star Games

    Seniors Sydney Hard, Athena Bermeo, Ali Hyman, and Daniel Maffezzoli will represent Riverdale Country School at the NYC Mayor’s Cup Lacrosse All-Star Games on Sunday, June 2 at Poly Prep Country Day School in Brooklyn. This is the game that will decide who will officially be crowned “Best in the City.” The doubleheader will showcase the independent schools vs. the PSAL in the girls’ all-star game at 4:00 p.m., followed immediately by a boys’ all-star game between the independent schools and the Catholic high schools at 6:00 p.m. All of the most up-to-date information about this event can be found atwww.facebook.com/nycmayorscup/.

  8. Eight Seniors Named to Mayor’s Cup ‘Best in City’ Soccer Lineups

    Five senior girls and three senior boys from Riverdale were selected to represent the independent schools in the 2012 NYC Mayor’s Cup Soccer All-Star Games this year. While the Mayor's Cup regrettably had to cancel the event in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, "all of the participants should be very proud of their selection as the Best in the City," organizers said. Defender Emily Dann and midfielders Athena Bermeo, Zoe Clark, Sydney Hard, and Melissa Libutti were selected from the Girls Varsity Soccer team; forward Robert Lubin and midfielders Kevin Gilligan and George Niedermayer were chosen from the Boys Varsity Soccer team.   9. Former Parent, Opera Singers Perform for ILS Class

    As part of the seniors' Integrated Liberal Studies (ILS) unit of the Enlightenment, former Riverdale parent Regina Rheinstein and opera singers Theresa Santiago and Michael Wanko recently came to RCS to perform selections from Mozart's opera, The Magic Flute. Regina, a former Riverdale parent, has been doing this talk for nearly 20 years. She introduces the plot of the opera and the musical techniques that Mozart employs to tell a story of love and redemption. Theresa and Michael, who are married in real life, sing solos and duets from the opera about the desire for love and wish for a family.   10. Upper School students debate abortion

    Jed Silverstein's debate class recently met for a public group debate on abortion issues, judged by an audience of faculty members. Student debate performances ranged from lively emotional appeals to calculated and serious rhetoric. Mr. Silverstein's class's next public debate will concern capital punishment.
