  1. Stu-Mu News!

    [ By on April 10, 2014 ]

Every spring, Riverdale puts on its student-directed musical (or stu-mu, as it's affectionately called.) This year's production is Songs for a New World by Jason Robert Brown. Although we have a small group (the cast is about 20 people) everyone is really close-knit and we're all psyched for the show. We've only had one rehearsal so far, but it already seems like we're going strong! I can update soon about the status of the show, but I can't wait to how everything turns out!

  2. Post-Show Sadness

    [ By on March 12, 2014 ]

Now that Once on this Island is done, everyone in the cast seems a bit sad. I mean, I don't blame them: We worked together as a group for such a long period of time (almost four months!) and everyone grew closer. For me, spring break is on its way and I still have an outside production of Legally Blonde to perform in, so I wasn't as disappointed and I definitely didn't suffer from "show withdrawal." But everyone grew as a cast and did really well in our performances. Even though we had a few mishaps, as all shows do, things went pretty smoothly and we had some pretty enthusiastic crowds. It was interesting to see the different reactions to the show, ...

  3. Snow Day and Midterms

    [ By on January 30, 2014 ]

Like most students, I love snow days. However, we recently had a snow day that came right in the middle of midterms, which caused a lot of problems. The snow started during the first day of exams, so the school closed early and cancelled the afternoon science exams for some of the students. The next day, school was closed, so all of the math exams were cancelled. You might think this is a good thing, but a lot of people were really stressed by it, especially since they had been studying for so long! The third day of exams, which were foreign language tests, was back on schedule. I wish I had been able to take the math midterm and ...

  4. The Juggling Act

    [ By on January 08, 2014 ]

If you couldn't tell from reading my other blog posts, I'm really into theater--whether it's a play, an improv sketch, or a musical, I'll probably be involved. While I love doing all the shows I can, both inside and outside of school, keeping up with my grades and managing to balance two musicals at the same time is hard. I'm currently in Riverdale's production of Once on This Island, but I also am going to be part of a separate musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, with a theater group based in Yonkers. For about two months, during an "overlap period," I run from an RCS rehearsal to one in Yonkers, only to get home at 9:00 p.m. without having already started ...

  5. Once On This Island! (US Musical 2013)

    [ By on December 11, 2013 ]

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post about the then-upcoming musical auditions. I practiced hard, went into my audition, and waited. Well? I got in! I, along with almost 2 dozen of my classmates, am going to be performing as a storyteller in the Upper School musical Once On This Island, which narrates the story of Ti Moune, a young peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of her island, Daniel. Although we've just gotten started, everyone is already excited to begin work on such a fun and upbeat show. The songs and dances we've just started to learn are amazing! The musical really brings together people from all over RCS into such a cool ...

  6. One World Day 2013

    [ By on November 18, 2013 ]

This year's One World Day centers around going "Into the Wild" since we read that book over the summer. There are lots of different things to do, with many activities off campus. We don't have any classes and instead we go do some interesting stuff. Some of my friends are going hiking, some are going to parks and museums. I am staying on campus because we have the play, Rites: A Children's Tragedy, that night. I am going to do a dance workshop in the morning and then go down to the Lower School to lead a nature walk with the younger kids.  I think it will be a fun day.

  7. Upcoming Musical Auditions

    [ By on October 31, 2013 ]

Although we haven't yet performed our Upper School fall play, Rites: A Children's Tragedy, notices have been sent out about auditions for this year's Upper School musical, Once on This Island. All of us are pretty excited! Once on This Island is described as  "the highly original and theatrical adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid." In it, we're told the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of her island, Daniel. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love. Everyone is pretty hyped that we're going to be doing such ...

  8. Theater Class

    [ By on October 08, 2013 ]

Since coming to Riverdale I've always loved performing and doing shows, which is why I'm so glad I'm in Acting I this year. Even though the class is tiny, with 2 girls and 7 boys, it's one of the most fun classes I have at RCS. There's a large mixture of people with tons of different personalities and ideas. We've recently been working on scenes by David Ives. My two partners and I are performing a scene in which three construction workers have a conversation about their lineage during their lunch break. The project gives us a chance to work with people we haven't done scenes with before, and even though the scenes are a bit strange they are interesting ...

  9. US Fall Play

    [ By on September 18, 2013 ]

Auditions were recently held for the Upper School's fall production of  Rites: A Children's Tragedy. Similar to Frank Wedekind's Spring Awakening, the play focuses on children in the 1800's learning about growing up and becoming adults. I was cast as one of the friends of the main character. Although there are almost 2 dozen of us in the play, most of us already know each other and we've already become pretty close, even after only two rehearsals. Some of the themes in the play are a bit controversial, but it doesn't make reading the script hard or uncomfortable. All are okay with performing it, and we had a discussion the first day about what is going on. Discussing the ideas and ...

  10. Gender Neutral Bathroom

    [ By on May 15, 2013 ]

As part of a movement to increase gender equality, GLOW (Gay, Lesbian Or Whatever) has recently installed a Gender Neutral Upper School bathroom on the first floor of Mow Hall. The members of GLOW are creating this bathroom for a one month trial period, from now until the end of the year. People all over Riverdale have different opinions on the new bathroom. I wasn't sure at first how I felt about it. I was a little uncomfortable about using it if guys were going to be in it, too. But then I realized that that's exactly the point! That's how people who are transgendered probably feel every day. And at least I have other options; there's a girls bathroom down ...
